10 YEARS AGO (2009): Freshman Hailee Walsh tallied six aces, including the match point, to help Bismarck State College sweep NDSCS-Wahpeton 25-21, 25-20, 25016 at the BSC Armory. For good measure, Walsh had half of the Mystics' 20 assists. Brianna Tausend took care of the others.
20 YEARS AGO (1999): Courtney Geinert hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to lift St. Mary's to a 54-52 West Region girls basketball victory over Minot on the Saints' home floor. Minot had gone ahead 52-51 with just three seconds left to play. Geinert scored 10 of her 14 points in the fourth quarter. Kristi Vetter also scored 14 points for St. Mary's and Shayla Bohl added 13.
50 YEARS AGO (1969): Elgin High School's football prospects may be looking up somewhat with the return of 11 lettermen. First-year Dutchmen coach Bob Schaible expects some improvement from a team that finished 0-6-1 last year. Seniors Dick Nicklous and Dale Schock are expected to fill the running back and quarterback spots, but Steve Wetzel leaves a backfield void at fullback. Wetzel is out for the season with a hip injury.
Quarterback Tom Brady (2000-current), lineman/kicker Lou Groza and kicker Don Chandler (1956-1967) each played in nine championship games.
