Rain and wind couldn't dampen the competition at the high school girls golf East-West Classic held at Hillcrest Golf Course on Tuesday.
Century's Hannah Herbel claimed medalist honors after a one-hole playoff victory over Fargo Shanley's Julia Wald. It was the second tournament victory of the season for Herbel, who finished Tuesday's round with a 1-over-par 73. She said her key to success was consistent strokes that avoided Hillcrest's treeline.
"I felt like I chipped really well," Herbel said. "My drives were going pretty straight, so overall I was happy with the way I was playing. I am pretty glad that I didn't make many 3-putts today and overall my short game was pretty good."
Wald came away with second place and Minot's Becca Tschetter placed third, carding a 4-over 76.
Century, led by Herbel's effort, edged Fargo Shanley by a single stroke -- 322 to 323 -- for team honors. Century also won last week's season opener at Dunseith.
Williston, led by Kaleigh Carmichael's 77, posted a 332 to take third and help the West Region claim three of the top five spots.
Leah Herbel's 80 gave Century two of the top 10 placers. She tied for eighth.
Mandan's sixth-place team finish (363) was topped by Deona Roehrich's round of 78, good for solo-seventh.
Abby Schmidt of St. Mary's carded a 77 to tie for fifth with Carmichael. The Saints placed eighth (363).
Up next on the West Region golf schedule is the Dickinson Invite at Heart River on Monday. The following day, Prairie West hosts the Mandan Invite.
