BOBCATS SNAP WINGS' STREAK
Mitchell Walinski and Adam Stacho scored goals 51 seconds apart in the first period, and the Bismarck Bobcats halted the Aberdeen Wings’ 19-game winning streak.
Four different players notched goals for the Bobcats in a 4-1 victory over the NAHL Central Division leaders on Saturday night at the VFW Sports Central, gaining a split of their weekend series.
Nic Sicoly scored at 7:06 of the first, staking the Wings to an early advantage.
But Walinski’s 11th of the season at 12:07 knotted it up at one goal apiece, and Stacho’s 10th of the season at 12:50 gave Bismarck the lead for good.
Daniel Chladek’s power-play goal, his sixth of the season, at 18:51 of the second gave the Bobcats a 3-1 lead through 40 minutes.
Andy Stoneman added an empty-net goal at 17:36 of the third.
John Roberts stopped 37 of 38 shots he faced to pick up the win in nets for Bismarck. Matt Vernon finished with 20 saves for Aberdeen.
DEMONS GARNER NO. 1 SEED
DICKINSON -- Bismarck finished a perfect 10-0 run through the West Region on Friday, defeating Dickinson 37-30 to clinch the No. 1 seed in the state Class A wrestling tournament.
The Demons, who have won 35 straight duals, handed Dickinson it's first regional loss. The Midgets, 9-1, have secured second place. Century wrapped up the No. 3 spot with dual wins over Williston and Watford City on Saturday to improve to 8-2.
Minot 7-3, will be the No. 4 team from the West at the state tournament. The Magicians lost 34-27 to Dickinson on Friday, setting up the BHS-Dickinson showdown.
None of the other West Region teams finished the regular season above the .500 mark in regional competition.
The West Region Tournament, a state qualifying event, is the next step for the 11 regional teams. That tournament is scheduled for next Saturday in Belcourt.
CENTURY'S MATTERN POURS IN 40
Century senior Treyton Mattern poured in 40 points in the Patriots' 84-49 win over Williston on Saturday.
Mattern, a University of Mary recruit, came into the game averaging 22.5 points per game -- second-most in the West Region. Mattern sank six 3-pointers as part of his 40-point performance.
Century improved to 12-4 in the West Region and 12-5 overall. The Patriots are back in action on Saturday, Feb. 9, hosting Legacy at 7:45 p.m.
