Bismarck’s Channing Mann racked up 480 total yards against Fargo North in a Class AAA quarterfinal. The Demons senior ran for 389 yards, had 60 yards receiving and 31 return yards.

Talk to Channing Mann, and he'll tell you that playoff football is a time for execution and intensity.

"We came in and knew it wasn't going to be an easy win," Mann said Saturday after Bismarck's 46-20 quarterfinal playoff victory over Fargo North. "We came in and executed, and I guess we put up a couple of points."

Points and yards. The points and yardage just kept piling up and up and up for Mann at the Community Bowl.

Mann, a 6-foot, 175-pound senior tailback, ran for 389 yards and four touchdowns, caught a 63-yard TD pass and finished the night with 480 all-purpose yards.

He reached the end zone from 79, 7 and 69 yards out in the first half. After intermission he dashed 85 yards for a score and caught a 63-yard scoring strike from Tyson Gibson. When all was said and done, Mann had eclipsed his own BHS single-game rushing record by exactly 100 yards.

Mann handed off most of the credit to the rest of the offensive unit.

"If the linemen and fullback and even the receivers weren't out there making blocks, I wouldn't be able to do what I can do," he said.

Offensive guard Nick Nelson said the linemen can draw satisfaction from such a performance, as well.

"We had a pretty good night," he said. "We had a few mistakes, but in the second half we minimized our mistakes and things started to happen."

With Mann's explosiveness things seemed to happen frequently. Once the speedy senior had even a sliver of running room no one was going to catch him.

Exhibit A would be his final scoring run. He seemed stopped for about a five-yard gain among a clutch of North tacklers on a simple inside running play. But he popped loose and was gone for an 85-yard TD run.

"All I knew was I had to get at least three yards for the first down," Mann said. "... I put my head down and kept churning my legs and ran as hard as I could."

Bismarck piled up 441 yards on the ground in 37 attempts and finished the night with 517 yards total offense.

As if North didn't have enough headaches, Mann slipped into the game as a wideout for his final touchdown.

"We had two receivers on each side," Mann said. "... I made a move and got by (the defensive back) and Tyson laid a nice ball in there for me to catch."

Bingo. Sixty-three yards and an easy six points.

North, following the lead of running back Peter Saintal, racked up 390 yards. Saintal rushed 30 times for 230 yards and two touchdowns as the Spartans ran for 304 yards.

Much of that damage was done after the issue had been decided, however.

As BHS built a 33-7 lead, North was forced to punt five times in its first nine possessions. The other four drives included Saintal's 85-yard scoring run, a fumble, a loss of the ball on downs and the halftime break.

Mann said it all added up to the Demons' best outing of the season.

"I would say it's the best game of the season. We came together as a whole team tonight. And it was a playoff game."

Nelson wasn't as enthusiastic.

"We've probably had better games. We had a lot of penalties ... otherwise it was an all-right game," he said.

Bismarck was whistled for 80 yards worth of penalties.

The victory moves the two-time defending champion Demons into next week's semifinal round against top-ranked West Fargo.

The Packers handed Bismarck a 6-0 setback in the season opener. Bismarck is 8-1 since with six straight wins.

"We can celebrate a little bit, but not too much, Mann said. We've got a long road ahead of us."
