The Bismarck Demons volleyball team discovered Legacy High School isn't a bad place to call home on Thursday night.

BHS knocked off Century, the No. 1 team in the West Region coaches' preseason poll, 3-2 at Legacy's Haussler gym.

A little ragged around the edges, the match was close, nonetheless. The Demons carved out the victory via a 23-25, 29-27, 25-23, 20-25, 15-13 margin.

Bismarck closed out the hard-fought match when a block attempt by Century's Hattie Fitterer bounced out of bounds.

BHS hitter Macy Wetsch, a 5-foot-9 senior, said an abundance of hitting errors by both teams was likely the result of too much nervous energy.

"The speed of the game was just so fast we got too excited," she said. "There was too much adrenaline, for sure."

Century, down 18-11, rallied to take the first game 25-23.

Bismarck responded by outlasting the Patriots 29-27 in the second game, which was tied on 14 occasions, including at 24, 25, 26 and 27 in overtime.

BHS had Century on the ropes after taking the third game 25-23 on a kill by Emily Stonecipher, but the Patriots weren't done.

CHS fell behind 9-5 in the fourth game, but came back to knot it at 10, the fourth of nine ties. The Patriots broke away from a deadlock at 20 to run off five straight points, the last a combined block by Arianna Backman and Macy Fridgen.

Century opened a 6-2 lead in the fifth and final game, but Bismarck came back strong, running off eight straight points for a 10-6 lead. Callie Stonecipher contributed two kills and a block to the surge.

Down 12-9, Century battled back with four unanswered points to go ahead 13-12.

That proved to be the end of the line for the Patriots, however. A Century hitting error, a kill by Wetsch and the out-of-bounds block ended it.

Bismarck improved to 2-0 in the West Region and 6-3 overall with the victory. Century stands 0-1 in the region and 6-2 overall.

Wetsch was unofficially credited with 17 kills for Bismarck. Callie Stonecipher unofficially logged 11 kills and 5.5 blocks.

Hattie Fitterer's unofficial totals of 12 kills and 2.5 blocks paced Century.

Wetsch said Thursday's victory was important for BHS.

"It feels amazing because Century is a really good team. We have new coaches and a new team, so we needed to come togther. This was the time," she said.
