10 YEARS AGO (2008): University of Mary linebacker Shawn Melland will play in the eighth annual East Coast Bowl this weekend. The game, played in Petersburg, Va., features elite NCAA Division I-FCS, II, III and NAIA players.

20 YEARS AGO (1998): Malachi Nelson had more rushing yards and more touchdowns than any other player in the North Dakota College Athletic Conference. And this week he received more votes than anyone else in a media poll to earn conference player of the year honors. Nelson was the only player named on all 16 ballots.

50 YEARS AGO (1968): Dickinson High School basketball coach Pierre duCharme is optimistic the Midgets can improve on last season's 8-14 mark. The Midget starting five will be shored up by three returning regulars -- 5-10 Ray Brew, 6-3 Gae Culver and 6-1 Bryan Foster. All are seniors.
