10 YEARS AGO (2008): Renaldo Major figures it will take him at least a couple of weeks to get back into basketball shape. But his familiar smile was in midseason form as the Dakota Wizards began their first day of practice. Major, 26, is returning to the game after missing a year due to heart surgery. Major, a 6-foot-7 forward, was the D-League defensive player of the year in 2007.

20 YEARS AGO (1998): If a senior citizen can go into space, as John Glenn did, then a senior citizen surely can bowl a 300 game. Matt Jahner of Bismarck did just that at Midway Lanes. The 63-year-old retiree, who has been bowling since he was 16, shot the first 12-strike game of his life in the Friday Seniors League.

50 YEARS AGO (1968): Any hopes of a successful basketball season at Raleigh St. Gertrude's is apparently going to rest on the shoulders of juniors Roger Kopp and Florian Zins, the Saints' only returning lettermen. New coach Chuck Utter hopes to see continued improvement from his team with the goal of a .500 season.
