The many ridiculous and false assertions of Larry Larsen (Dec. 18) and the recent release of the socialist “Green New Deal” represent the worst of the left’s reactions to natural climate change. There are few, if any scientists, that don’t believe there is climate change. The earth has been through ice ages and periods of record warmth long before man’s existence.
Larsen repeats the absurd and discredited statistic that “97 percent of climate experts agree humans are causing global warming.” This number was first stated by then Secretary of State John Kerry and President Barack Obama in May 2014. A possible source is a 2009 article (Eos, Transactions American Geophysical Union) by Maggie Kendall Zimmerman, then a student at the University of Illinois that stated 97 percent of scientists agree that humans are a significant contributing factor to increased global temperatures.
It was based on an online survey of two questions of selected “scientists.” It did not include physicists or meteorologists. Only 79 of the 3,146 who responded listed climate change as an area of expertise. A second potential source occurred in 2013 when John Cook, an Australia-based blogger, reviewed abstracts of peer-reviewed papers published from 1991 to 2011 and published his findings in Environmental Research Letters. Subsequent review of his work indicated only 41/11,944 blamed human activity for climate warming.
A 2012 survey of the American Meteorological Society indicated 39.5 percent (of 1,854) believed man-made global warming is dangerous. Finally, the Petition Project has 31,000+ signatures by real scientists (9,000+ Ph.D.) who concur that “there is no convincing scientific evidence that human release of …. carbon dioxide, methane, or other greenhouse gases is causing or will in the foreseeable future cause catastrophic heating of the Earth’s atmosphere and disruption of the Earth’s climate.”
Mr. Larson — you were a teacher; do your homework.
