It is in the best interest of the people of North Dakota that Measure 1, the North Dakota Anti-Corruption Amendment becomes law in our state. Please vote yes on Measure 1. This is not a partisan bill. This measure is being supported by Dina Butcher, Republican and Ellen Chaffee, Democrat, who brought 38,451 signatures to the secretary of state, over 11,000 more than necessary to get on the ballot.
This measure relates to transparency of information to choose candidates for office, vote on ballot measures, and ensure that their representatives are accountable. What the measure does is: creates a nonpartisan ethics commission, restricts gifts from lobbyists, ends foreign money in elections, prevents personal use of campaign money, shuts the revolving door on officials becoming lobbyists, and roots out conflicts of interest. These are all common sense programs that will assure that our state government functions fairly and effectively.
An area this bill will address is legislators, commissioners, and staffers from taking substantial gifts from the industries and businesses they are regulating. It will also require that campaign contributions be used for campaigns and not for personal use.
North Dakota is one of only 7 states without an ethics commission. South Dakota passed a similar law and it is working well there. This law will be good for transparent government in North Dakota. Please vote yes on Measure 1.
