Ten years ago my husband and I experienced a high-risk twin pregnancy. Due to a medical condition, we knew both babies would not likely survive; we faced the decision to terminate one twin to save the other. At 19 weeks, five days we decided to try bed rest and wait another week to see if that would help. Sadly, we lost both babies as I laid on bed rest at home and faced a nightmare.
A 20-week ban, we would have had the additional intrusion of government into our personal medical decisions. A decision that was between me, my husband and our God. I don’t want to imagine that added to my nightmare of that time.
I, for one, applaud Sens. Heidi Heitkamp, Amy Klobuchar and Tina Smith for voting to keep the government out of these deeply personal, often difficult, medical decisions.
As a girl from western North Dakota I value my independence, my faith and not having the government mingle in my personal decisions.
