The Code Enforcement office of Mandan filed a citation for a code violation against the Lonesome Dove for a western mural painted on the front of their establishment. Of course, everyone should follow the codes established for the good of the community, otherwise, we would have absolute chaos.
However, I find the City's action to be discriminatory against one business establishment while ignoring many violations of other business establishments. For example, instead of worrying about a "mural," the City should take a good look at the two mobile home parks on 3rd Street — Wildwood Mobile Home Park & Parkview Estates. These Parks need to be better maintained!
According to the Code of Ordinances of the City of Mandan, Sec. 16-3-2, which states in-part: It is prohibited and declared a public nuisance for any yard, lot, place or premises to have an accumulation of rubbish. I am not disparaging anyone who lives in a mobile home park, but I do believe that the park owners should ensure that everyone has a safe, decent place to live. Perhaps, there are other areas of our City that need to be addressed as well. If so, it is the job of the Code Enforcement office to work with residents and business owners to maintain a safe community environment and to improve the quality of life in our neighborhoods by eliminating unsafe, hazardous conditions.
My question is this, when is Tim Helbling, Mayor of Mandan, and the City Commissioners, going to do their job and make our city a safe, decent place to live that everyone can be proud of? Election year is coming up — if this group of elected officials can't get the job done, we need to elect someone who can.
