The Trump Administration joined GOP led states in wanting to entirely overturn the Affordable Care Act with North Dakota joining in that lawsuit in 2018 with approval from the insurance commissioner Jon Godfread. The move would eliminate federal protections for preexisting conditions and impact Medicaid expansion. Those were the two most popular provisions! How backward has the Legislature of North Dakota become?
Thirty-three Republicans voted no on an amendment on a bill that would have protected the 316,000 individuals, including myself. I've had type 1 diabetes for 50 years. I have also had open heart surgery including nine stents in my heart. However, the term "pre-existing condition" does not mean you've had similar health struggles. If you had a seizure when you were an infant, but are now in your 30s and healthy, pre ACA you could be denied coverage. Arthritis and high cholesterol are also fairly common conditions that would merit denial pre ACA.
If the Affordable Care Act is ruled unconstitutional millions around the country will have to live in uncertainty. The legislature had a chance to do something about the 316,000 living in North Dakota, but they choose not to. I encourage you to find your Representatives vote on SB 2010 and if they voted no, demand an answer! The people of North Dakota deserve better than living with the uncertainty about their families' health care!
