Second Lieutenant John J. Fortune grew up in Bismarck, graduating from Saint Mary's High School in 1939. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps and served with the 721st Squadron/450th Bomber Group where he was a navigator on a B-24 Bomber. He was killed in action on March 24, 1944 over the Adriatic Sea while on a mission from Manduria, Italy to bomb a ball bearing plant in Austria. He was 23 years old.
His body was never recovered, but there is a marker to memorialize him in the ND Veterans Cemetery in Mandan.
