A Wishek man, 48, died Monday in a three-vehicle crash on the Highway 58 Bridge over the Missouri River, 8 miles north of Fairview, Mont.

The bridge, which was closed for about 3.5 hours as a result of the collision, was icy and snow-covered, according to a report by the North Dakota Highway Patrol.

The fatal crash unraveled as Charles James King, driver of a 2015 Ram 3500 pickup, attempted to slow down after seeing a truck topper sitting in the southbound lane. As a result of the icy conditions, King, 28, of Shubuta, Miss., slid into the south barrier and then struck a 1994 Chevrolet Suburban, driven by the Wishek man traveling in the northbound lane, head on.

A third vehicle, a 2007 Pontiac G5, was traveling behind the Ram. The driver, Jarrod Weber, of Sidney, Mont., attempted to avoid the collision by steering right but struck the north barrier of the bridge, then continued south, striking the front bumper of the Ram.
