The North Dakota Department of Health is responding to a pipeline leak that spilled about 200 barrels, or 8,400 gallons, of produced water in Divide County.
USG Bakken Midstream, an affiliate of NextEra Energy Resources, reported the spill that was discovered Sunday about 3 miles north of Fortuna in far northwest North Dakota. It occurred at an above-ground portion of the pipeline, said Bill Suess, spill investigation program manager for the Department of Health.
“They caught it pretty quickly,” Suess said.
The produced water, a waste byproduct of oil production, contaminated rangeland. The spill did not affect water sources.
Health officials and the North Dakota Industrial Commission are inspecting the site, monitoring cleanup and continuing to investigate.
