An oil and produced water spill occurred as a result of equipment failure Monday in Billings County near Fryburg, according to the North Dakota Department of Health.
Hess Bakken Investments II LLC spilled about 200 barrels of oil and 225 barrels of produced water onto the well pad containment area, according to a news release from the Health Department.
About 20 barrels of oil and water mixture migrated off the well pad and onto adjacent pasture land, as well into Sully Creek.
Personnel from the North Dakota Oil and Gas Division and the Health Department are at the site and will continue to monitor the investigation.
