A 79-year-old New Salem man died in a vehicle crash early Thursday on Interstate 94 about 10 miles east of New Salem, the North Dakota Highway Patrol said.
A 37-year-old Hazen man was driving east on I-94 shortly before 6:30 a.m., following a 1997 Toyota Tacoma driven by the New Salem man.
The New Salem man braked and slowed down for an unknown reason and the Hazen man was unable to stop in time, rear-ending the Tacoma and sending it into the ditch, the Highway Patrol said.
The Tacoma overturned and came to rest on its roof. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The Hazen man was not hurt, according to the Highway Patrol. Both were wearing seatbelts, a news release said.
The drivers’ names were not released pending family notification and continued investigation.
