Lightning is blamed for recent fires and spills at two saltwater disposal sites in western North Dakota.

The state Oil and Gas Division says both incidents happened during storms on Friday.

Slawson Exploration Company Inc. reported a fire at a saltwater disposal site about 7 miles east of New Town. It resulted in the spill of about 36,400 gallons of oil and about 109,300 gallons of byproduct saltwater on site.

Bullrock LLC reported a lightning strike at a site about 5 miles south of Keene. About 4,600 gallons of oil and 41,600 gallons of brine spilled on site.

Cleanup of both sites is under way, under the monitoring of state inspectors. No injuries were reported.
