Authorities have identified a New Mexico man who died in a head-on collision in the western North Dakota oil patch.

Twenty-nine-year-old Steven Candelaria, from Los Alamos, N.M., was driving a pickup at a high speed in the wrong lane of state Highway 23, and it collided with the semitrailer when it crested a hill about 9 miles east of Watford City, according to the Highway Patrol.

Someone had reported the pickup for reckless driving before the crash that happened about 11 p.m. Wednesday, the patrol said.

The man driving the semi was taken to a Watford City hospital with unspecified injuries. The patrol identified him as John Farris, 48, of Hooper, Utah.
