The North Dakota Health Department is raising the limits on radioactive oil waste or TENORM, and asking for public comments. Public meetings will be held at various locations during the third week in January. I encourage comments, or attendance to these meetings.
I believe the state leaders have already determined the outcome, but they may be a little more restrictive if public input demands it. The health department is basing their rulings on an outside study that they commissioned. This study does not reveal the true effects of inhaled dust particles that will affect both workers and residents living downwind of dump sites, but only measures the readings from a survey meter or film badge. Steps can be taken to reduce exposure to the public, but at an increased cost, such as enclosed transfer buildings. Your public input is vital.
