During Pope Francis’s visit, President Barack Obama invited him on a Potomac River cruise. They were admiring the sights, when the pope’s hat blew into the water. Obama yelled, “I’ll get it.”
Obama stepped off the yacht, onto the water, walked over to the hat, picked it up, and walked back and handed it to Pope Francis. The next morning, the Republican Party proclaimed: “Obama can’t swim!” This fanciful tale has the ring of truth to it.
Recently, Republican presidential candidates criticized Obama’s decision to swap Iranian prisoners for the imprisoned Americans. Sen. Marco Rubio accused Obama of not working enough, for their release, when negotiating the nuclear deal with Iran. Gov. Chris Christie said, “… you know, the Iranians have treated this president with disrespect for years and he continues to take it.” Sen. Ted Cruz welcomed the return of Pastor Abedini, but criticized the deal.
Donald Trump, the “chaos candidate”: temperamental, cynical, demagogic, narcissistic, totally ignorant of national and world issues, was fearful of being exposed, by conservative political commentator Megyn Kelly. Thus, Trump skipped the recent Iowa debate like a spooked adolescent.
Having gotten away with it, if he becomes the Republican presidential candidate, he will surely refuse to debate the Democratic presidential candidate. If Hillary Clinton becomes that candidate, he knows she would rhetorically eviscerate him.
Recently, with several mass killings still fresh in our minds, he irresponsibly boasted, "I could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody and I wouldn't lose any voters.” Perhaps so, but the NYPD would still arrest, handcuff and haul him off to Rikers Island Correctional Facility. That’s reality TV at its best.
U.S. Marine Amir Hekmati, learning his four-year Iranian prison ordeal was over, expressed joy and gratitude to Obama. These are the things that make America great.
