Walter “Walt” S. Werre, 81, Bismarck, passed away May 11, 2019, at St. Alexius Medical Center after a hard fought battle to regain his strength following several surgeries over the winter.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 20, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with Pastor Craig Schweitzer officiating. Friends and family will gather at 5 p.m. Sunday, May 19, at DaWise-Perry Funeral Services, Mandan. There will be a Masonic Service and a Prayer Service at 7 p.m. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Garden. There will be no visitation, as cremation has taken place.
Walt was born Jan. 19, 1938, in Bismarck, the son of Lester and Beva (Scott) Werre. Walt started first grade in Vancouver, Wash., during World War II. After the war, his family moved back to Bismarck where he finished his education, graduating from Bismarck High School in 1957.
Walt married Donna Thompson in Oct. 1957. They had three children, Lori, Scott, and Todd.
Walt joined the National Guard while still in high school. Upon graduation, he entered the U.S. Army. He was honorably discharged in 1960. He then started his career in sales, working for Lorillard Tobacco Company, Hart Motor, OMF, KFYR-TV, KXMB-TV, and helped start the new KNDX-Fox TV in Bismarck. Walt married Mary Evans in 1991 and retired in June 2004.
Walt married Jeanie Schields in 2006. They enjoyed wintering in Arizona until poor health required them to remain in North Dakota full time. They were both avid Minnesota Vikings fans and Walt also taught her to enjoy Minnesota Twins baseball.
Walt was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, a life member of Bismarck Elks 1199, and belonged to the Bismarck Masonic Lodge No. 5, the Scottish Rite, El Zagal Shriners, and the El Zagal Oilers. He was past president of the Missouri Slope Shrine Club, El Zagal Oilers, and Heartview A.F.F.H., as well as on the board of directors for many years.
One battle Walt didn’t lose was his quest for sobriety. He was 17 days short of 44 years of sobriety, living one day at a time. He was an inspiration to many.
Walt loved to hunt and fish, especially with his sons and grandchildren. He enjoyed spending time with his family and beamed with pride when talking about his four great-grandchildren. He will be deeply missed by those who loved him.
Walt is survived by his wife, Jeanie; daughter, Lori (Rick) Holweger, Steele; sons, Scott (Melanie), Baldwin, Todd (Shelly), Lincoln; sister Robin, Bismarck; step-sons, Loren (Anne) Schields, Annandale, Va., Kevin (Susan) Schields, Gonzales, Texas; seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to the Scottish Rite Speech Therapy Center, P.O. Box 2094, Bismarck, ND 58502; Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 106 Osage Ave., Bismarck, ND 58501; or a charity of the donor’s choice.
