BEULAH — Tom McLaughlin, 62, Beulah, passed away April 18, 2014, at St. Alexius Medical Center, Bismarck. Services will be held at 10 a.m. CDT Wednesday, April 23, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Beulah, with the Rev. Kenneth Phillips officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. CDT Tuesday at the church with a vigil service at 7 p.m.
Tom was born on Aug. 24, 1951, to Joe and Alvina (Hiehn) McLaughlin in Hazen. He graduated from Beulah High School in 1970. Tom married Vesta Kitzan on March 11, 1972, at St. Joseph Catholic Church. The couple had five children, Shawn, Tracy, Darcey, Casey and Terry. Tom and Vesta lived in Hebron for a short time when they first married while Tom worked at the Hebron Brick Company. In 1973, he began working for Knife River Coal, which later became Dakota Westmoreland where he retired from in 2006. Tom was an active member of UMWA Local No. 1101, holding various offices and served on the negotiating committee. Vesta passed away on June 25, 1988.
Tom was a strong democrat and a union man. He loved all things baseball, especially watching the Minnesota Twins. He also greatly enjoyed playing softball and darts. Tom had a wonderful sense of humor, often not being able to tell a joke to its end because he was already laughing. Tom also enjoyed going for long drives, telling old stories and black licorice.
Tom greatly valued the time he spent with his family and friends, especially his children and grandchildren, his brothers and sisters, and his good friend, Brad Gunsch.
Tom is survived by his children, Shawn McLaughlin, Beulah, Tracy (Jamey) Backus, Beulah, Darcey (Traves) Guthmiller, St. Joseph, Mo., Casey McLaughlin, Beulah, and Terry (Crystal) McLaughlin, Beulah; 16 grandchildren, Payton, Taya, Kayson, Averi, Adakin, Ainsleigh, Aackley, Jordon, Tim, Ashley, Madison, Kaylee, Dasan, Trent, Reese and Parker; one brother, Jim (Pat) McLaughlin, Dickinson; one sister, Geri Pavlicek, Dickinson; one sister-in-law, Marceal McLaughlin, Hazen; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Alvina; his wife, Vesta; one brother, Joe McLaughlin; one sister, Kathy Beck; one infant sister, Shirley; and two brothers-in-law, Don Pavlicek and Harold Beck. (Barbot Funeral Home, Beulah and Hazen)
