Roger Willis

Roger Lee Willis, 68, Lincoln, formally of Williston, passed away surrounded by his family, June 9, 2018, at his home after a four month battle with cancer. Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 14, 2018, at DaWise-Perry Funeral Services, Mandan with The Rev. Chris Walstad officiating. Visitation is scheduled from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, at DaWise-Perry Funeral Services, Mandan. Visitation continues one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan.

Roger was born Oct. 19, 1949, in Bottineau, to Lee and Agnes (Eklund) Willis. He was raised and educated in Williston and graduated from Williston High School in 1967. He served in the United States Army as a radio operator during Vietnam. He was honorably discharged in 1971. He studied Diesel Mechanics at NDSSS in Wahpeton in 1976 and received an Associate of Arts degree from University of North Dakota, Williston, in 1992.

Roger worked in the oil field most of his life, including various positions with Flying J. Refinery, Tuboscope, Dowell/Schlumberger, and National Oil well Varco. He also worked at the Mercy Hospital Mental Health Unit and managed the AMOCO/ Superpumper in Williston.

On March 22, 2003, he married Mary (Walstad) Hanson. They retired in 2012 and relocated to Lincoln, in 2013, to be closer to family. He worked part-time for MAC’s and Lowes. He enjoyed volunteering at Charity MOPS.

He enjoyed a variety of activities. In his younger years, he enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing, and taking in the beautiful scenery while driving truck all over the Western U.S. He loved 60’s music and old movies and was a huge Peanuts/Snoopy fan. In his later years, he very much enjoyed every second he had with his grandchildren. They brought him so much joy.

Roger will be deeply missed by his wife, Mary, all of his children and grandchildren, his “adopted grandchildren’ (especially those at MOPS) and many other family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Mary; two daughters, Brandi (Jason) Stensos, Chanhussen, Minn., Lori (Rob) Frank, Mandan; three sons, Brian (Audra), Mandan, Corey (Ashley Kuyath), Apple Valley, Minn., and Nathan (Lacey) Hanson, Bismarck; six brothers, Michael (Carol), Williston, Greg (Charlette), Watford City, Tim (Dee), Williston, Grant (Rosemarie) Hinderer, Glendale, Ariz., Neil (Pam) Hinderer, El Reno, Okla., and Lyndon (Susan) Hinderer, Dickinson; grandchildren, Asher, Carson, Landon, Neve, Jaxon, Brooklyn, Sloan, Brady, Zoe, and Wyatt; Aunt Edna Ostdahl, Uncle Cliff Eklund, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents and granddaughter, Lily.
