Patricia “Patty” Backsen, 66, New Salem, passed away Nov. 11, 2017, at Sanford Health, Bismarck. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 16, at Peace Church, New Salem, with The Rev. Joshua Eddy officiating. Burial will be in Peace Church Cemetery.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.

Patty was born Nov. 6, 1951, to Albert and Irene (Fauth) Backhaus. She grew up on a farm/ranch northwest of Linton, and graduated from Linton High School. In 1974, she married Toby Backsen. Together they made their home on the Backsen family ranch in New Salem. It is here where they farmed, ranched, rodeoed, and raised their two daughters.

She was an all-around hand at life in general. She was a cowgirl, hired hand, and a beauty queen. She grew up riding race horses, training horses, rodeoing, and queening. She enjoyed ranching, hunting (and was quite a shot), fishing, and shooting pool. She was Toby’s right-hand man from branding cattle, fixing fence, driving pickup and trailer with cattle or horses, to anything else that needed to be done. She could do it all and did it well.

Patty loved animals and had a special gift with them. She had a great passion and love for her family and friends. She enjoyed spending time with them any chance she got. Her grandchildren were her biggest pride and joy. She was the BEST grandma ever and the kids knew it. She loved to cannon ball in the pool, sled ride down the worst hill, and sit around the campfire sharing secrets. These were just a few of her many favorite things to do with them. She seldom missed a game of her grandson’s or a barrel race of her granddaughter’s.

She took great pride in her giant yard and flower garden. Her flowers were always so pretty which was just a reflection of her. An all-around hand she was, a heart of gold she had. She was truly the most selfless soul and a great example of what a good person was. She was the best wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She most definitely was beautiful on the outside, but what lied within her was Gods most precious work.

Patty is survived by her husband, Toby Backsen, New Salem. Daughters, Billiell (Curt) Leingang, Mandan, and Jamie (Travis) Hande, Glen Ullin. Brothers, Richard Backhaus, Linton, and Arlis Backhaus, Lincoln. Grandchildren, Connor Leingang and Jorja Hande. And many special family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Irene Backhaus; and her In-laws, Bill and Adeline Backsen; and many special family and friends.
