ASHLEY - Funeral service for Marvin Goettle, 72, Ashley, will be 11 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2017, at Zion Lutheran Church in Ashley. The Rev. Linda J. Schauer and Rev. Tim Johnson will officiate.

Burial will be in Zion Lutheran Cemetery.

There will be a prayer service Monday at 7 p.m. with visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Marvin died Thursday, Nov. 9, at Ashley Medical Center.

Marvin, son of Peter and Bernice (Wirtz) Goettle was born Aug. 2, 1945, in Kenmare. His family lived on a farm in Donnybrook. In 1956, his family relocated to a farm 11 miles east of Ashley. Marvin graduated from Ashley High School with the class of 1963. He then attended North Dakota State School of Science at Wahpeton, graduating with a Certificate in Diesel Mechanics.

Marvin was united in marriage to Barbara Eszlinger on Oct. 2, 1965, in St. David’s Catholic Church in Ashley. Marvin worked as a mechanic at Farmers Union Station then Ashley Motor Company. In 1972, he began working at Fey, Inc., the John Deere Dealer in Ashley, working there until 1995. In 1996, Marvin began working for McIntosh County with the road crew for five years.

Marvin enjoyed working out on the prairie; doing tasks such as fencing, or handling cattle, fixing machines or engines. He will always be remembered as an excellent mechanic. Marvin was everyone’s friend and was always willing to lend a hand if able.

Marvin was a member of Zion Lutheran Church where he had been a former church council member and Sunday school treasurer. He was also a former Boy Scout leader and had served on the Ashley Medical Center Hospital Board. Marvin served with the Ashley Fire Department for 35 years.

Grateful for having shared Marvin’s life are his wife of 52 years, Barbara; two sons, Tim (Sheila) Goettle, Campbell, Minn., and Bob (Connie) Goettle, Casselton; two brothers, Jerry (Viola) Goettle of Ashley and Mike (Jerri) Goettle, Coweta, Okla.; two sisters, Mary (Steve) Howard, Brandon, S.D., and Pat (Tony) Koester, Oroville, Calif., one sister-in-law, Lori Goettle, Roseville, Calif., and four grandchildren.

Preceding Marvin in death were his parents, one brother, David and two nephews, Peter Goettle and George Goettle.

Honorary casket bearers will be Marvin’s grandchildren, Dallas Goettle, Faith Goettle, Luke Goettle and Rylee Goettle; Marvin’s four godchildren, Kayla Sandburg, Terry Goettle, Garland Dobler and Stacy Goetz; Jeff Jenner, Steve Spitzer, Shannon Spitzer, Jim Heupel and Hugo Zimmerman; and all other nieces and nephews.

Casket bearers will be Terry Goettle, Paul Goettle, James Goettle, John Goettle, Tony Zimmerman and Eric Heupel.

There will be a duet by Faith Goettle and Jonah Nelson and solos by Stacy Goetz and Terry Ulrich.

The family prefers memorials to Ashley Fire Department or Ashley Ambulance.

Carlsen Funeral Home of Ashley has been entrusted with arrangements.
