Karen was born June 22, 1934, in Dickinson, to Vincent and Susanna (Follmer) Miklautsch, the seventh of eight children. She was raised in Dickinson and attended Dickinson High School. She furthered her education at Marquette University and became a dental hygienist and later worked in the family law office. Karen married Thomas F. Murtha on June 19, 1967, at the home of her sister, Marianne in Hales Corners, Wis. Together, Tom and Karen raised their four boys in Dickinson.
Karen will be fondly remembered by her family and friends. She was an active and dedicated member of her church and could be seen playing the organ at weddings and most Sunday services. She was also generous with her time, volunteering often, playing daily mass at the local nursing homes, or serving oversight at a local election. Karen loved music and gardening. She was an avid reader and an intense sports fan. However, her greatest love was her family. She enjoyed watching her grandkids and attending family events. Karen was an inspiration of love and devotion to her family and was especially fond of her many nieces and nephews.
Karen is survived by her children, Thomas F. IV (Janilyn), Dickinson, J. Patrick (Dana), Northfield, Minn., Daniel (Sarah), Plymouth, Minn., and William, Dickinson; and her ten grandchildren, Katherine, Thomas F. V, Gwyneth, Rhiannon, Chase, Gabrielle, Brooklyn, Oscar, Maxwell and, Hazel; her sisters, Eleonore, Cecelia, and Agnes.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years who died in January of this year; as well as her brother, Thomas; sisters, Marianne, Theresa, Mary; and daughter, Mary Katherine.
