James Smith, of New Town, passed away peacefully at his daughter’s home in Albuquerque, N.M., on Aug. 5, 2019, surrounded by family.
He was born on May 30, 1932, and raised in Makoti. He attended Minot State College and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business. James spent most of his life farming in western North Dakota and had a love of the land. One of his most important accomplishments in this life was the relationship he developed with each of his eight grandchildren.
James is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Merilyn Smith; daughters, Delores Pederson (Tommy Carrion), of Albuquerque, and Melinda Thorton (Esley), Bismarck; son, Leighton Smith (Dianne), Valley City; grandchildren, Nicholas Pederson (Melise), Nathan Pederson, both of Albuquerque, Kylie Anderson (Orlando), Green Bay, Wis., Madison Smith, Trierre Smith, and Esley Thorton (Ellie), all of Fargo, Matthew Thorton (Pam) and Rhannon Thorton (Laiken), both of Bismarck; great-grandchildren, Kinley and Eve Thorton, Bismarck, and Cale Ludwig, Fargo.
