James R. Horner, 72, Mandan, passed away Feb. 13, 2018, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. A memorial service will be held at St Joseph's Church in Mandan, Saturday, Feb. 24, at 10 a.m. A gathering will be held afterwards at A&B Pizza located at 1017 E. Interstate Ave., Bismarck, from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Jim was born in Graceville, Minn., to Edwin and Elizabeth (Leick) Horner. He had one brother, Michael Horner to whom he was close with. He grew up in Minnesota and graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in geology. Being a geologist, he traveled often which led him to relocate to Mexico for work where he met Rebeca, the two married and had three children, Maria (Mary Lou), Michael, and Xochitl. They set roots in Mandan. Jim had many hobbies such as gardening, basketball, and tennis.
He would later retire in 2008 and move to Rio de Janeiro with his wife, Josina.
Jim is survived by his wife, Josina; daughter, Maria (Forrest) Dockter; son, Mike (Sarah) Horner; daughter, Xochitl (Andrew) Snyder; and grandchildren, Hudson, Estelle, Jameson, Ellie, Oliver, Evelyn.
Jim is preceded in death by his parents, Edwin and Elizabeth Horner; and brother, Michael Horner.
