Duane had a long career as a grocer starting in the business while still in high school. In the 1950s he worked for Red Owl, owned his own grocery store in Enderlin in the 1960s, and for the last 25 years of his career he worked in various business development roles for SuperValu.

In his retirement years, his scroll saw was always going as he made intricate wooden treasures for his family and friends.
