Don was born April 20, 1928 in Claremont, Minn., to William & Maude (Erath) Pickett. At 18 years of age, Don enlisted in the U.S. Army in September 1946 during World War II and was honorably discharged in September 1949. Shortly after his discharge, Don married Evelyn Anderson in Rock Dell, Minn. His early life employment was in construction, bakery, and the elevator industry.
In 1960, Don married Arlene Schlafmann-Barrett in Aberdeen, S.D. In 1974, Don and Arlene relocated from their home in Bismarck to the family farm near Turtle Lake. He farmed and remained employed with Otis Elevator for 37 years. Don continued to farm until October 2017 when he moved to Edgewood Vista Assisted Living in Mandan.
Don held a passion for raising small grain crops with his son, Scott. Along with Don’s ability to work the soil, he had an impressive knowledge for working with his hands whether it was construction, electrical wiring, or concrete finish work. He enjoyed fishing, camping, and traveling. His favorite times where spent with fellow military veterans enjoying coffee and breakfast at Bev’s Café in Turtle Lake.
