Deb Hoffman

Deb Hoffman

Deb Hoffman, a longtime resident of Bismarck and recently Boise, Idaho, died at the Fred and Pamela Buffett Cancer Center in Omaha, Neb., March 8, 2019, from complications of graft versus host disease after a bone marrow transplant for acute myeloid leukemia.

Mass of Christian burial will be held at 12:30 p.m. Monday, March 18, at Cathedral of the Holy Spirit, her spiritual home. Family will be receiving friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Sunday, with a rosary at 7 p.m. at Bismarck Funeral Home.

Debbra Kaye Kanta was born Aug. 27, 1957, in Williston, to Rudy and Loretta Kanta. Deb attended St Joseph’s Grade School and Williston High School. She studied nursing at the University of Mary, where she met her husband Randy. Both graduated in 1979. They married and settled in Bismarck where they started their careers and a family.

Deb worked as a registered nurse in the intensive care unit, emergency room and pre- and post-op care at St. Alexius Medical Center in Bismarck. Following her career with St. Alexius, she worked in public health for Burleigh County. Above all, she valued her faith, family and dear friends. Her eight-month journey with leukemia was sweetened by precious time with family, particularly her 21-month-old grandson, Dean.

She is survived by her husband, Randy Hoffman; daughter, Kelsey Klute, son-in-law, Jordan Klute, and grandson, Dean, Lincoln, Neb.; son, Matt, Chicago, and daughter-in-law-to-be, Claudia Najarro, Queens, N.Y.; brothers, Daniel Kanta, Polson, Mont., and Darcy Kanta, Grand Forks, and their families.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Douglas; father, Rudy; and mother, Loretta Kanta.

In lieu of flowers or memorials, Deb’s legacy would best be honored with the following: registration at the National Marrow Donor Program (bethematch.org), donation of blood or platelets or donations to Hope Lodge, which provides accommodations for cancer patients in Omaha and around the country (donate3.cancer.org).
