Courtney was a beautiful child of Kevin and Tina DeGree. Courtney was raised on a farm fifteen miles from Foxholm along with her three sisters; Megan, Brittany, and Emily. On the farm, Courtney grew a great admiration for animals. If anyone was ever looking for Courtney, you could find the dogs or baby kittens and she wasn’t too far.
Courtney was a humble child of God, who loved life. It did not take much to make Courtney happy. She was grateful for all she had. Courtney never asked for anything, yet gave everything. Courtney cherished her relationships with her grandparents, Don and Evelyn DeGree. She learned how to cook, bake, talk, and cherish family based on the values modeled from grandma and grandpa. This knowledge was celebrated when Courtney was a grand champion winner for Grandma’s Angel Food Cake recipe. Grandma and Courtney were so proud!
Her dad, mom, sisters, fiancé, Kahlor Krefting, animals, and newly started nursing career kept Courtney grounded. Megan, Brittany, and Courtney kept up with Emily’s volleyball, basketball, and softball schedule and attended as many games as possible. Courtney never kept her tips or tricks on how to win to herself so Emily always had another three coaches on the other side of the court.
Fall brought Courtney and Kahlor home for the weekends. They loved hunting and she set up her deer camera, selected the perfect corn/apple mix, and waited for the perfect shot. This last year she waited a little too long for a shot, and said “Oh well, next year.” Kahlor brought out the best in Courtney and opened up a future she never imagined. She was happy.
Courtney graduated from Des Lacs, Burlington High School, in 2014. Courtney was an active member in FFA, National Honor Society, and the varsity volleyball team. After high school, Courtney attended University of Mary, in Bismarck, where she graduated with honors in April 2018 with a nursing degree. Courtney was so proud when she received her nursing pin from her beloved grandfather, Don. From then, Courtney accepted a position as an orthopedic nurse at Sanford in Bismarck. Courtney was beginning to understand the knack of shift work; work more hours, earn more money. She just purchased her first car one month ago.
Courtney so loved her family. With having three sisters, Courtney was never lonely. From sitting in the hunting blind, weeding green beans with mom’s ABBA or 80’s rock blaring out the speakers, jumping in the hay, camping in the yard, mud running in the sloughs, or the countless hours of playing volleyball in the front yard (thank you, Butch), Courtney and her sisters had each other’s back through it all.
Courtney met the love of her life, Kahlor, in December of 2016. Courtney and Kahlor were just starting their life together. Kahlor will be a lifelong part of the DeGree family. He loved our daughter and treasured the beautiful woman she was becoming. They had plans to get married in September of 2020.
Courtney truly was one of a kind. She lived a simple and honest life. She will be greatly missed by so many. Her mom and dad will forever miss their beautiful “Courtney Elizabeth." Fly high with those angel’s wings until mom can sing “Bye, Oh, Bye, Oh Baby” again to you in heaven.
