Cleve Edwin Cowley, 88, passed away Jan. 6, 2019, in Bismarck. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 11, at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan.
Cleve was born in Dupree, S.D., on May 28, 1930, to Rex and Hattie Cowley. Cleve graduated from Ambrose High School in June 1948 and joined the Navy two weeks after graduation. He married his high school sweetheart Donna Gjovig Nov. 14, 1951, while home on leave from the Navy. After his time in the Navy, he attended MSTC where he received his teaching degree in English. He later received a master’s degree in Laramie, Wyo. Cleve taught school in Coteau, Ambrose, and Crosby where he was not only an English teacher but also a school counselor, principal and coach.
After Cleve retired from teaching, he was a customs officer in Noonan and Whitetail, Mont., for six years. Cleve and Donna then retired and moved to Hebron where they lived until 2016, at which time Cleve moved to Mandan after Donna’s death.
Cleve had a love for all kinds of music. He enjoyed playing his piano, violin, harmonica, ukulele, and guitar. In his free time, you could also find him playing a game of cards with friends or at the local bingo hall. In his younger years, he enjoyed all types of dancing and attending community dances.
Cleve is survived by his sons, Steven (Natalie) Cowley, West Fargo, and Kelly Cowley, Minot; daughters, Kimberly (David) Saunders, Warrenton N.C., Melodee Groninger, Minot; 10 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was proceeded in death by his wife, Donna Cowley, his parents, Rex Cowley and Hattie Selle, and his brother, William Cowley.
