Bernice Corrine Boerner passed away peacefully at sunrise on April 29, 2013, at Diamond Willow in Alexandria, Minn. She fought a hard battle with brain cancer surrounded by her children.
Bernice was born Jan. 9, 1934, in Land Township, Grant County, Minn., on the river bottoms of the Pomme De Terre River, where the family farm was located. She was the daughter of Ole “Burney” and Cora (Munson) Thorstad. She attended country grade school and graduated from Hoffman High School, Hoffman, Minn.
In 1955, Bernice was united in marriage to Harlan “Bob” Boerner, settling on the family farm near Herman, Minn. To this union, the couple was blessed with eight children: Debra Ann, Tamara, Terry, Mark, Scott, Michael, Bruce and Paul. Bernice loved being a farm wife, driving tractor, baling hay, picking rocks and driving the grain trucks at harvest. Her vegetable gardens were a source of pride and abundance. When first married, Bernice tended nine dairy cows and gave each one a special name. It saddened her when they left the farm and gazed back at her one last time.
Bernice raised chickens, pheasants, pigs, feeder cattle and was known for her fried chicken and rhubarb dumplings.
In 1974, Bernice traded farm soil for blue water when she moved to Lake Oscar near Holmes City with her children. Her home was a gathering place for the neighborhood children. Bernice worked as a cook at Andes Tower Hills and Alex Golf Club, where she was known for her omelets. Bernice will be remembered as a hard and dedicated worker. Whatever she did she did to perfection.
In her spare time, Bernice loved antique hunting, cross country skiing, playing cards, dancing, embroidering and sewing. She sewed many beautiful dresses and play clothes for her children. Bernice treasured and adored her eight grandchildren and drove many miles to spend time with them. She was wonderful to neighbors and friends, taking care of them and making sure they got to their different appointments.
She is survived by her children, Tamara Stoneburg and friend, Dave, Ashby, Minn., Terry (Mark) Krenz, Bismarck, Scott (Cathi), central Minnesota, and Bruce (Sara), Holmes City, Minn.; eight grandchildren; her brothers, Maynard (Carol) Thorstad, Earl Thorstad and LeMay (Lillian) Thorstad; and her sister, Ruth Ann Star.
She was preceded in death by four children, Debra Ann, Mark, Michael and Paul; her parents, Cora and Ole “Burney” Thorstad; four brothers, Myles, Orville, Eugene and Kenneth; and three sisters, Lois, Irene and Genevia.
Services were held on May 3 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Holmes City, Minn., with the Rev. Denise Croskey officiating. Burial will be at Kongsvinger Cemetery, Donnelly, Minn. (Anderson Funeral Home, Alexandria, Minn., www.andersonfuneral.net)
