BEULAH — Anna Carolina Julianna Magdalina (Weidner) Frei, 96, Beulah, formerly of Halliday, got her Christmas wish and died peacefully on Dec. 22, 2015, at Knife River Care Center, Beulah. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MST Saturday, Dec. 26, at Our Savior Lutheran Church, Halliday, with the Rev. Mary Lou Aune officiating. Burial will be at Halliday Cemetery.
Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.
Anna was born July 2, 1919, north of Zap, to Martin and Anna (Knittle) Weidner. She was raised and educated two miles north of Zap. On Feb. 13, 1938, she married Philip Frei at her parents’ home due to a snow storm. The couple resided on the Frei ranch throughout most of their married years, until moving into Halliday in 1987. Philip passed away on Jan. 22, 2002, after nearly 64 years of marriage.
Anna was well-known for her caring heart, her gift of storytelling, helping others and her quick wit and one-liners. It was a cold day when anyone could pull one over on Anna. She loved to garden and quilt, making numerous quilts for her family. She had a passion for cooking, especially fleishkueckla, and entertaining anyone who came to her door and no one ever left hungry. She also enjoyed playing cards, especially a German card game, Duroch, and playing marbles. Above all else, Anna loved to spend time with her family.
Anna was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church, Halliday, the German’s from Russia singing group and quilted with the church quilting group.
Anna is survived by her children, Marylene (Delmer) Weidner, Killdeer, Loucinda Martin, Salida, Colo., Ronald (Milda) Frei, Beulah, Larry (Sarah) Frei, Halliday, Carol (Lawrence) Sitter, Minot, Lynnae (Harlon) Weidner, Beulah, and Susan (Richard) Pelton, Killdeer; one son-in-law, Richard Engwicht, Judson; one daughter-in-law, Marlene Frei, Bismarck; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and two special friends, Ida and Clarence Rohde, Halliday.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Philip; one daughter, Louann Engwicht; one son, Robert Frei; three brothers, William, Albert and Henry; three sisters, Martha Schwartzman, Linda Weidner and Bertha Reiner; and four infant siblings.
