Albert Adam Materi, 89, Wahpeton, died Nov. 2, 2017, at his home, surrounded by his loving family. Services will be held at 5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 12, at DaWise-Perry Funeral Services, Mandan. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Bismarck.
Al was born Feb. 15, 1928, in Strasburg, to Tom and Margaret (Schmultz) Materi. He was raised and educated in Linton, St. Cloud, Minn., and Highland Park, Ill., and graduated from Linton in 1946. Al enlisted in the U.S. Army immediately after high school. Following basic training he was sent to Japan. After returning from two years of service, Al worked various jobs–from the grocery industry in Bismarck, to geographical surveying around the world.
Upon returning from his worldly travels, he met, fell in love, and married, Karen Ann Rene in August 1961. After two years of marriage, they adopted three wonderful children, Thomas, Rene, and Tisa, who were the complete pride and joy of Al and Karen. While raising their children, Al operated and owned grocery stores in the Bismarck area. Before retirement, he ventured to Bismarck State College as a Head Resident for six years.
After retiring in 1993, he volunteered for 13 years with the Salvation Army and served 12 major disasters; including Ground Zero, four trips to New Orleans, and the 1997 Red River Valley Flood. He was an active member in American Legion Post 1, for 50 years, the VFW, and the Elks Lodge. His hobbies included fishing, hunting, photography, and being an avid reader. He also loved attending his grandkids sporting events.
He is survived by daughter, Tisa Materi, Breckenridge, Minn.; son, Thomas (Peggy) Materi, Breckenridge; five grandchildren, Carena (Matthew) Materi-Ashburn, Cuyler, Casey, and Carcie Materi, and Trey Materi; one sister, Annailla (David) Chin, Virginia; one brother, Robert ‘Bobby’ (Shirley) Materi, Portage, Mich.; many loved nieces and nephews; along with all those who called him “Grandpa.”
Al was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Karen; sisters, Hilda (Jack) Sullivan and Marie Renden; brother, Leo (Susan) Materi; and in-laws, Felix (Rita) Rene.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers donations to the Salvation Army.
