After a lengthy illness, Agnes (Sam) Mathis Hillestad passed away Jan. 9, 2019, at the age of 78. The oldest daughter of Carl and Anastasia Mathis, Agnes was preceded in death by her parents; her husband “Glenn;” her brothers Joseph, Martin, and Christopher; and her sisters Genevieve and Esther. She is survived by her son Russ Spier, his wife Liz; her four grandsons, Morgan, Griffin, Tate and Sawyer; her brothers Clarence, David, Duane and Richard; her sister Nancy Feist; and her dear friends Patti and Dane Koranda.
Agnes was born in Flasher and raised in Mott and Bismarck. She loved Bismarck and never wanted to live anywhere else. After retiring from managing the Townhouse Motor Inn Convention Center for many years, she and her husband Glenn loved to cruise the Caribbean, including the Panama Canal, and enjoyed the night life and excitement of Las Vegas. Agnes and Glenn were avid bowlers and loved gatherings with friends and family. She could always be counted on for help whenever needed. She will be dearly missed. The family of Agnes requests that any offerings to her be given to your local food bank.
