An estimated $425,000 water main replacement project is slated to begin this fall for a portion of northwest Mandan that has experienced an “abnormal increase” in water main breaks.

Over the past four years, 20 breaks have occurred in the area of Custer Drive Northwest, Eighth Avenue Northwest and Monte Drive Northwest. Fourteen of the 20 happened in the last two years, with eight occurring this year, so far.

The city schedules a water main replacement project each year. Due to the increase in breaks, this particular area of town will receive priority in 2018.

According to Mandan’s Director of Public Works Mitch Bitz, old water mains will be replaced along with valves, hydrants and water service connections. Lead service lines and defective curb stops will also be replaced, as needed.

Work is slated to begin this fall in the area of Eighth Avenue Northwest. The remainder of the project will be completed next spring.

On Tuesday, the Mandan City Commission approved putting the project out to bid.
