Trey Bennett, 26, of Bismarck, and Mariano Rodriquez, 61, of Surrey, have been identified as the victims of a fatal crash in Ward County on Tuesday night, according to the North Dakota Highway Patrol.
The accident occurred at about 8 p.m. near the intersection of 46th Avenue Northeast and 13th Street Northeast, in Minot.
Bennett, who was driving a red Chevy Silverado pickup, was traveling westbound on 46th Avenue Northeast when he attempted to pass another vehicle, according to witness reports.
During the attempted pass, he struck a silver Dodge Durango SUV, driven by Rodriquez, head-on as it was traveling east.
Rodriquez, who was wearing his seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene. Bennett was not wearing his seat belt and was transported by the Community Ambulance Service to a Minot hospital, where he later died.
The SUV, which was totaled, came to rest in the south ditch facing north. The pickup was also totaled and came to rest on the north shoulder of the roadway, facing north.
There was fog and drizzle at the time of the crash, which remains under investigation by the NDHP.
