The Martin Luther King Holiday Commission has scheduled a public celebration of the holiday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Bismarck on Monday.

The event that begins at 7 p.m. will feature a community choir singing “Lift Every Voice and Sing.” The choir is open to all singers. Rehearsal is at 5 p.m. Monday at Trinity.

Featured speakers at the event are to include state Indian Affairs Commission Executive Director Scott Davis, Congolese refugee Merci Ndaberewe and Jeff Stone, a lifelong civil rights advocate.

The Martin Luther King Holiday Commission was first appointed by Gov. George Sinner after the 1985 Legislature adopted the holiday. The commission’s first celebration was in January 1986.

Monday's event is free, though a freewill offering will be taken to support the commission. For more information, contact Commission President Bill Patrie at (701) 391-3799 or billpatrie7@gmail.com
