The Bismarck Marathon, which will be held at Cottonwood Park, starts with a kid’s mini marathon on Friday and ends with the full marathon on Saturday.
The marathon races include a 5k run and walk, a 10k run, a kid’s mini marathon, a half marathon and the full marathon for which it’s recognized. All races include various scenic routes throughout Bismarck.
"Running just makes your whole day better," said Kathy Lein, a long-time marathon runner.
In 1981, the Bismarck Marathon was organized by the Missouri Valley YMCA and was a small success. More than 25 years later, it’s known as one of the largest running events in the state. The event now is coordinated by a group of local business leaders who are avid runners themselves.
“People should push themselves to do something that’s a challenge,” said Julie Jeske, a local Bismarck runner who has completed more than 25 marathons. “Running is a sport for everyone, for all genders and all ages.”
