The advisory body overseeing the cleanup of a diesel spill discovered underground in downtown Mandan more than 35 years ago is planning a public meeting to discuss the closure of the remediation site.

The Mandan Remediation Trust meeting will take place Wednesday, Jan. 22, at 6 p.m. in the Veterans Conference Room of Mandan City Hall, 205 2nd Ave. NW.

The event will include a history and progress report of the remediation process, as well as an overview of the plan for closing the site, according to the North Dakota Department of Environmental Quality. Members of the public will have an opportunity to ask questions and provide comment.

The spill, caused by BNSF Railway, was discovered in 1984. A $24 million settlement was reached in 2004, which funded the installation of 285 wells to collect the diesel fuel.

Environmental Quality is encouraging anyone seeking special accommodations for the meeting to call (701) 328-5150.
