The Prevent Child Abuse of North Dakota organization will be raising awareness about issues related to child abuse by participating in the Krolls’ marathon.

This year’s marathon will begin at 7:30 a.m. Sept. 15 in Cottonwood Park.

The 2010 marathon, with a route along the Missouri River, drew more than 1,800 participants, both individuals and groups. This year the team representing Prevent Chid Abuse of North Dakota will include Marnie Walth, Julie Bosch, Lori Klabunde, Leslie Brunette, Janelle Olson and Carly Emil.

“Not all of them have faced abuse, but they all want to spread our message,” said Karen Van Fossan, the organization’s communications director.

One of the team members who has faced abuse is Brunette.

“For years I’d run from it,” she said. “Now, I am running for prevention; it’s therapy.”

Brunette is working with abused teenage girls in Fargo through the Boys and Girls Ranch to help counsel victims. She also is a member of the Children’s Alliance for Justice, which is working on an extension of the North Dakota Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act.

“I want them to know that there is hope and stop the cycle,” she said.
