A Burleigh County prosecutor who unsuccessfully sought the office of county state's attorney has taken a new role elsewhere.
Assistant State's Attorney Brian Johnson said he starts Monday as deputy state auditor. His last day with Burleigh County was today.
"Looking forward to something new and challenging," Johnson said.
After a career in law enforcement with Lincoln and Mandan police and the Stark County Sheriff's Office, Johnson became an attorney and joined Burleigh County State's Attorney Richard Riha's office in March 2016.
Johnson challenged Burleigh County Senior Assistant State's Attorney Julie Lawyer for Riha's seat in the first contested election for the spot since 1998.
Lawyer won with 58 percent of the vote. She takes office Jan. 1, when Riha retires.
