The Morton County Sheriff's Department is warning the public of a report of a fake kidnapping and ransom scam.

The sheriff's department received a report on Thursday from a Bismarck woman who reportedly fell victim of the scam.

The woman received a call from a Florida phone number that had a man in the background saying he was being physically assaulted. The caller then said they had her son and she needed to wire them $5,000.

The woman's son lives in Florida, so the woman believed the call to be legitimate. Her son was later contacted and is fine.

The sheriff's department urges people to report scam calls such as this to local law enforcement.
