A suspicious item found by a Bismarck resident drew out the police bomb squad but turned out to be harmless.

The resident found the pipelike item Wednesday afternoon on Normandy Street and brought it to the Commons Avenue and Sixth Street area, where he alerted police.

The bomb squad deemed the device suspicious and used sandbags and explosive charges to render it safe, Lt. Luke Gardiner said. It turned out to be homemade but not an explosive, he said.
