The man accused of strangling a priest in Anamoose in early 2018 has changed his plea on related charges.
Chad Legare, 43, of Alexandria, Minn., was charged with felony counts of attempted murder, aggravated assault and burglary in connection to assault on the Rev. Robert Wapenski at the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church on Jan. 30 in Anamoose.
On Tuesday, he entered an Alford plea to attempted murder — essentially acknowledging evidence likely to convict him but maintaining his innocence.
Northeast District Judge Donovan Foughty dismissed the other charges and ordered a pre-sentence investigation.
Legare has been held at the Heart of America Correctional & Treatment Center in Rugby. He had been set for trial to begin Tuesday.
