Security at the Morton County Courthouse in Mandan will now extend to county commission meetings.
Morton County Sheriff Kyle Kirchmeier said the county provided overtime funds for deputies to continue security for the evening meetings, effective Thursday.
"It's just to increase the security when the meetings are going on, for the benefit of the public," Kirchmeier said.
Security measures include a walk-through metal detector and an X-ray machine at the front door. One or two deputies usually work courthouse security.
Morton County Commission Chair Bruce Strinden said deputies' related overtime would amount to four hours at most each month. The added security is a good thing for the public and county officials, he added.
"It's not a bad thing to do," Strinden said. "We have not had issues. We don't want to have issues, but ... with everything that goes on in the world these days, there's no rule that says we couldn't have an issue at some point and, if that happens, it certainly is good to have a deputy on hand."
Commission meetings are held at 5:30 p.m. on the second Thursday and fourth Tuesday of every month at the Morton County Courthouse.
