Woman out $300,000 to online scammer

A Bismarck woman has lost $300,000 to a man she met through an online dating website, police say.

The 59-year-old met the man through Match.com in April 2018, Officer Lynn Wanner said. The man told her he trades in gold and diamonds, and since April she’s sent him funds by way of MoneyGram and Western Union, sent cash by FedEx packages and made loans to him with personal checks.

The man told her he was from Minot, but the FedEx packages were sent to addresses in Georgia, Wanner said. The man told the woman he needed the money to secure work contracts, pay taxes and fund other business expenses. The woman reported the incidents to police on Sunday.

The two have never met in person, Wanner said.
